  • 24 Not-So-Random Things

    1. 24 years ago today, I spent the entire day in this building.

Where she was born has had a profound effect on my daughter.

    2. I spent most of that day staring at a poster of this guy taped to the ceiling:

DO I LOOK LIKE I HAVE STUPID
    WRITTEN ALL OVER MY FACE?

This may have had an unfortunate effect on her psyche.
Sometimes I can see Ernest P. Worrell in her words or actions.

    3. Twenty-four years ago today, my daughter was the only Caucasian baby in the nursery. The rest were adorable, tiny Asian babies. The nurse who held my 9 lb., 9 oz. baby over the gurney for me to gaze at for the first time snapped, "Hurry up! She's breaking my arm!"

    4. When she was a year old, she stored food in her chipmunk cheeks. I'd see her chewing something an hour after supper and find green beans in her mouth.

    5. When we walked at the Swap Meet at Aloha Stadium, she always brought a plastic bag and filled it with litter, dumping it in the trash barrels at the end of each row and filling it again on the next row.

    6. When we walked in the neighborhood (which no longer exists) she always carried a plastic bag and filled it with plumeria blossoms that had fallen from the trees and covered the sidewalks. She was very sad when I had to explain to her that most children don't live where flowers cover the sidewalks.

    7. Ball pits weren't popular yet when she was a toddler, but she enjoyed playing in Papa's Button Barrel whenever we went back to Arkansas for a visit.

    8. She has a knack for making friends with shy, hurting, or socially awkward people and helping them find their niche. I've seen her do this at every level of school beginning in kindergarten.

    9. She's a talented musician who can play piano, guitar, flute, bari sax, trombone, djembe and taiko drums.

    10. She discovered Lucille Ball in high school and I Love Lucy became one of her favorite TV shows.

    11. She discovered Absolutely Fabulous in college and that also became one of her favorite TV shows. She says Edwina reminds her of one of her grandmothers.

    12. She's been a voracious reader since written words began making sense to her 20 years ago.

    13. She enjoys dressing up as characters from movies and going to midnight openings.

    Scary resemblance.

    14. She loves animals of every size and type. I wish I could find the photo of her literally grabbing a tiger by the tail.

    15. She once took a fish to a Messiah concert.

    16. She's always been adventurous and she has the scar on her chin to prove it.

    17. She's loved the ocean and the beach since she was 3 weeks old.

    18. When she was about to go into middle school, I explained sex to her. She was completely and utterly disgusted. When I explained menstruation to her, she burst into tears and proclaimed, "It's NOT FAIR!! I want to be a BOY!!!"

    19. When she was four years old, she was determined to marry a fireman someday. I told her she could BE a firefighter, but she just shook her head no and said, "I'll just marry one."

    20. She loves to travel. She's been on many cross-country road trips and has also visited England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France. She wants to visit Italy and Malta. She'd better marry a rich fireman.

    21. She spent 13 years in Girl Scouts, starting with Daisies and working her way up to Seniors. She earned the Silver Award and the Gold Award, went to the British Isles with Girl Scouts and stayed at Pax Lodge in London.

    22. She began taking dance classes at age three and continued through her senior year of high school. Her first job was student teaching at the dance studio.

    23. She helped me get started on xanga and was my first subscriber.

    24. Her name is Krysten and her xanga site is here. Today is her 24th birthday. She's grown into a remarkable young woman, but she's been feeling very stressed lately; I'm sure lots of birthday wishes will cheer her up. Go spread some love and happiness.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COOKIE!
    I LOVE YOU!!

  • Aw. This is so sweet. It literally brought tears to my eyes. It's very touching that you'd write this about your daughter. I hope she has a very happy birthday. :)

  • She's a terrific young lady.

I would be proud to call her my step daughter (hint hint).

Happy Birthday to you too Vi.

  • This is incredibly sweet! Also, your daughter sounds like an interesting person :)

  • So sweet - Happy Birthday to her!

  • When my mother explained sex to me, I wasn't entirely sure I believed her. It didn't sound like it would actually work.

  • Wow, some truly wonderful pictures there, that she's going to hate you forever for posting ... Hehehehehe ....

I am away to tell her that she's wonderful and to have a Happy Birthday!

  • I'll be 24 in less than two weeks.
I think I had the same model flute your daughter holds in that picture.

She is lucky to have a mom like you. My mom won't make a blog post on my birthday -- she probably wont' even call.

  • Thats a beautiful birthday tribute!

  • What a sweet birthday gift! Think I'll go wish her a happy birthday now!

  • The Aloha Bowl seemed pretty clean when we went last year....maybe you started a trend!

  • awe, that was the sweetest thing. You should scrapbook this for her future husband, ( or her dates.)

  • This is a wonderful birthday tribute to your beautiful daughter.

Happy Happy Birthday to your dear heart~

  • What an awesome tribute. Congratulations on raising such an amazing person!

  • Happy Birthday to Krysten!! :) Happy proud Mama!

  • This made me tear up. Lovely post!!

  • Aw. How lovely.

  • This was wonderful = )

  • Wow, this is a really sweet tribute to your daughter.  I dunno who's luckier to have who; seems to me, both of you are great people :)

  • what an awesome tribute to an awesome kid... and in case I don't get a chance to tell her, I know a few single firefighters I can hook her up with!  But trust me when I say- being one... much more fun than marrying one! LOL

  • She is beautiful inside and out!!! Be proud today of the fine woman you raised!!!

Oh, and just a hint to her...there is no such thing as a rich fireman! The do make wonderful husbands though!!!

  • When my friends children are celebrating their birthday, I bring mom flowers.  Great job momma! I love this tribute to her.  You are two fabulous woman.

  • @Jaynebug - Aw, thanks for the flowers! I usually send her flowers, but I went with money this year. I thought she might prefer buying groceries to eating flowers.

  • @saintvi - A good mom through and through.  Flowers get a bit chewy and although colorful can be a bit bitter.

  • I went over and wished Krysten happy birthday - but I forgot to tell you happy birth day - why aren't birthdays all about the mom's anyway - were the ones who labored away on those days  you did good though!

    @firefighterswife - great advise there

  • Where is that?  I saw your daughter's post...mentioned being born in a military hospital..."where she was born affected her life"

Conclusion:  was she born at a US military hospital on foreign soil?
(My dad and a couple of his siblings were born in Germany because Uncle Sam had my grandpa stationed over there.)

Other option:  lucky girl was born in Hawaii.

  • I had no idea she was your daughter!  I saw the Bellatrix pic and was thinking "Hmm, this looks like one of the people I randomly found and friended on Xanga awhile back" but didn't make the connection until I clicked the link. Haha. Sorry, I just love finding connections like that.

But yeah, I love the pictures!  This was a wonderful post, it really made me smile.

  • This is such a beautiful post!  Mind if I borrow the idea when my daughter turns 18?  It's so wonderful to have children we can be so proud of and love so much!

  • @Romans_837 - Lucky girl was born in Hawaii! That's TAMC (Tripler Army Medical Center) in the photo. I was in the hospital for five days after she was born and my room overlooked the flagpole where they played Taps every night. It was really depressing!

  • I've never met a rich fireman.  I think she might have to make the money herself...

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to see this picture of her grabbing the tiger's tail.

  • @saintvi - I can't speak for all flowers but I do know that carnations taste better than you'd probably expect.  I know nothing about the nutrition content of carnations though...

  • @just_the_average_jane - My husband is also on here, as well as all my brothers and sisters and a slew of other family members.

@mrcolorful - I wish I could find it. I would ask my older sister to look through her photos for a copy of it, but I'm kind of in hot water with her at the moment over a text message, a BBQ joint and Jenny Craig (again). It's bound to turn up someday.

  • @saintvi - That sounds like there must be a very good story behind your being in hot water with your sister.  I can think of any number of ways that a BBQ joint and Jenny Craig would not mix well but I struggle with figuring out how a text message fits in there or how you apply to that situation.

  • You are such a great Mom!

  • Happy birthday! Remember, if you still want to marry a firefighter, arson is your friend. Haha!

  • What a fantastic tribute! You obviously love your daughter. You are both lucky to have each other.

  • This was lovely.  I went by her site and wished her a happy b-day.

  • on my way -can't believe you wanna hide the face that made her...

  • ryc: i have actually done that...without the laptop. perhaps my friends at the target starbucks (the best one in town) wouldn't mind seeing me once a week.

  • Well...Happy Birthday a day late....I wandered over to her site to give her belated birthday wishes.
I was half asleep when I started reading this...and my initial reaction to the first picture was "WHY did she spend 24 hours in the Pentagon and WHY does she remember the exact date 24 years later"....rofl. Then I realized #1 is was NOT an octagon and
#2. there are NO mountains in Washington DC!!!
    Sometimes I worry myself!!! lol
    Have a great Friday
    Ruth Ann

  • This was a beautiful post.  I hope she had a terrific birthday!

  • I was just like her with # 18. I wanted to be a boy too. Men don't know how good they have it. lol Hope she has a wonderful Birthday.

  • Happy 24th Birthday! Best wishes for the future. Enjoy something every day. And thanks to xanga for providing the opportunity to greet you.

  • Very nice post/tribute to your daughter. Guess I'll have to wait for a granddaughter for all the fun dance class and GSA stuff... but I'm nt in a hurry!
