Winter Photo Walk
In the 20 years we've lived in southwest Michigan, I have never once gone down to the pier in winter to see the lighthouse encased in ice. Until yesterday. I finally womanned up, pulled on my big girl longjohns and went out into the cold to see this annual phenomenon. It was very cold, but the sun was shining and the wind wasn't blowing, so it didn't feel too bad - except for my feet, but once they lost all feeling it was all good.
Here is my photo walk from the parking lot to the pier. It was a short walk, but very scenic.
Snow Covered Dunes
Winter Beach
The Lake Shore
View Down the South Pier
(The North Pier - or Lighthouse Pier - is across the river.)
Crazy Kayaker
(I thought I was crazy to be on the pier, then I saw this guy.)
Black Ice(My feet kept slipping in the loose snow. I finally checked under the snow and found about a half-inch of glassy smooth, solid ice. This is what black ice looks like; invisible. I walked on hard packed snow as much as possible after realizing how much ice was on the pier.)
Icy Railings
(This gives you an idea how slippery the pier was under the snow.)
Past the Railings(I didn't go past the safety railings. I watched in horror as a couple with a young daughter walked to the end of the icy pier. They walked ahead of her, backs facing her the entire time I watched. It was a recipe for tragedy, but I didn't stick around long enough to see if they all made it back.)The ice-covered lighthouse was beautiful and dramatic, but the quiet peace of the snow covered dunes and the deserted winter beach seemed more beautiful to me. I almost always opt for peace over drama, in photography, in blogging and in life.

I'm cold just looking at these! But they are gorgeous pictures.
Thanks for sharing those beautiful photos!!!
beautiful photos!
i'd be nervous for the young daughter, too. interesting decision making on their part. ugh.
Thanks for all these pictures.. The outer lighthouse has a melting look even though everything around shivers, deeply frozen...
Michel
stunning, just stunning! Thanks for sharing
That last photo is spectacular.
Great pictures! I took my TX grandkids walking on the frozen lake once. I slipped, fell, and hit the back of my head on an ice chunk. Fortunately the oldest grandson had his learner's permit. I had him drive us a few blocks to a friend's house where I could call home (Pre-cell ph. days.) Later when the bleeding didn't stop, I went and had stitches. Black ice is the worst.
Breath taking photos and so peaceful and full of energy at the same time.
Yes like life, calm and peaceful, and right around the corner-drama and wild energy.
Have a good week end that got here all to fast.
This is beautiful but there is no way I'd gone out in it. brrrrr
These were all amazingly beautiful. Cold as it is, it looks peaceful as well. I would have been one of those crazy people taking pictures for sure.
That is really awesome! I probably would have been one taking pictures, but not venturing past any safety anythings...
Beautiful pictures.
@Ampbreia - @SisterMae - @ellie1945 - @aSeriesofFortunateEvents - Thank you! I'm glad I finally did it.
@Jaynebug - Thank you! Toes are all present and accounted for!
@mlbncsga - I stayed warm today. Wore my snow boots instead of my hiking boots.
@lonelywanderer2 - You're welcome - and thank you!
@SarahakaHungry - I don't know what they were thinking. That part of the pier is not safe for children in the best of weather conditions. At least hold the kid's hand, for crying out loud.
@michelmthomas - I love your imagery. Thank you!
@atticusfin - @MyHomeIsWriting - Thank you!
@Roadkill_Spatula - It was a pretty awesome sight, especially with the sun shining on it.
@ata_grandma - Ouch! Glad it all turned out okay!
@Grannys_Place - You put into words what I was feeling. I'm always drawn to the peace more than the drama, but I do enjoy going out to the beach beside the pier when there's a good strong wind and watching the waves crash over the top of the lighthouse. Guess I need to let my wild out once a year or so.
@C_L_O_G - The cold was manageable except for my feet. I should have worn the snow boots instead of the hiking boots. I was going for traction over warmth.
@armnatmom - @i_am_not_short - I've told myself every winter that I was going to go out there when it froze. I'm glad I finally did it.
@dingdongdingbat - It only took me 20 years to work up the courage!
Gorgeous photos ! Thanks for sharing.
